Insurance for Gas Stations Shreveport – Recap

In last week’s episode, Chad ran through his options in his head.

Eventually he decided to try his luck at approaching his home in hopes of perhaps getting in and out quickly either before or after the police arrive to look for him.

Shreveport Corner Store Insurance – Coverage Scenario Part 24

Chad made his way quietly up the small hill that led to his street, being careful to stay in the shadows. He crept along in the grass just beyond the sidewalk to make his footsteps less noticeable, just in case someone was already on the lookout for him.

When he arrived on his street he stopped to take a look at the area around his house.

No cars in the driveway or in the street out front. He also didn’t see anything that resembled a police car further up the street.

“Maybe I’m not too late after all,” Chad thought to himself.

Emboldened a bit, Chad jogged his way briskly up the street toward his house.

His plan was to enter his house through the back door, grab money, food, a blanket, and whatever accessories he could reasonably carry in a backpack, and get out as fast as he could.

He looked both ways one more time, then prepared to cross the street.

Will Chad’s plan work out? Find out next time.

Insurance for Gas Stations New Orleans – Recap

In previous articles, Rob finally confronted Chad about the scheme he’d been pulling for the last several years.

He sat Chad down in his back room office at the gas station and presented him with the latest bogus charity promotion cards.

Chad attempted to feign ignorance and keep his cool but his nervousness was palpable and ultimately gave him away.

At last, Rob said to Chad, “Would you like to confess to what you’ve been doing every day for the last several years?”

To Rob’s surprise, Chad bolted out of the room.

Let’s find out what happens next.

New Orleans Corner Store Insurance – Insurance Scenario Part 20

For a second, Rob just stared blankly after Chad. After a moment, though, he snapped out of his stupor and ran after his employee.

Patrons filling their gas tanks watched with apprehension as Chad sprinted out of the storefront and up the up the sidewalk. A moment later, they turned to watch Rob run as fast as he could after him.

Chad was younger than Rob by almost two decades, so Rob decided after a block that it wasn’t worth continuing the chase.

Instead he jogged back inside and called the police.

What will become of Chad? Find out in part 20.

Insurance for Gas Stations Baton Rouge – Recap

This week we continue to seek the answer to the following question: in addition to covering burglary and armed robbery, does a Crime Endorsement also cover employee theft and embezzlement?

Last week we explained how Chad managed to avoid detection for all these years even though his boss did periodically check the legitimacy of the charity donation cards.

So, we now understand how the “heist” was pulled, but how did Chad manage to steal such a large sum – over $20,000 – despite only pilfering $4 or $5 at a time and no more than a few times a day?

Let’s do the math.

Baton Rouge Corner Store Insurance – Insurance Scenario Part 14

If Chad stole an average of about $14 each day (some days he took more and some days he took less, of course), that works out to about $70 out of the register each week.

Still doesn’t sound like that much, though, right? Well, let’s keep going.

If Chad works 50 weeks out of the year, that means he was stealing approximately $3,500 from his employer annually.

$3,500 per year over the course of Chad’s six years of employment works out to something in the ballpark of $21,000!

As you can see, those small sums of money add up quite a bit over time.

You might be wondering how it all came to an end for Chad. We will begin that portion of the story next time.

Insurance for Gas Stations Louisiana – Recap

Last time, Tracy explained to Pete that he does not have a crime endorsement on his business insurance, and therefore  is not covered for the theft of his business’ deposit money.

She also informs him that even if he had purchased the crime endorsement, he would not have been covered in this specific case, anyway.

Why? Let’s find out.

Louisiana Gas Station Insurance – Insurance Scenario Part 8

“But why?” Pete asks, incredulous. “That doesn’t make any sense. I mean, I understand that I wouldn’t be covered because I didn’t have the endorsement, but how could it still not be covered even if I had it?”

“That’s a very good question. Give me just a moment to pull up the policy and I’ll explain.”

Tracy pulls up Pete’s business insurance policy for his restaurant.

“I have your policy in front of me, Pete,” says Tracy calmly. “If you have a copy of it handy then I can point you to the appropriate section.”

Pete makes no indication that he is going to look for his policy, so Tracy presses on.

“I’m going to read verbatim a snippet from the ‘Money and Securities’ section of the policy. It reads:

‘We will pay for loss of “money” and “securities” used in your business resulting directly from theft, disappearance, or destruction-‘”

“Wait a minute,” says Pete suspiciously. “Doesn’t that mean my deposit is covered?”

“Yes,” answers Tracy. “But there’s more…”

She continues reading.

“‘– while at a bank or savings institution, within your living quarters or the living quarters of your  partners or any employee having use and custody of the property, at the described premises, or in transit between any of these places.'”

“In other words, Pete,” Tracy clarifies, “your policy only covers your money when it’s stolen on the bank premises, your house, or while you’re traveling between any of those locations.”

“So when I stopped at the gas station to grab a drink for the evening…” says Pete.

“… you nullified your coverage for the deposit.” Tracy finishes.

“But why?” Pete asks, frustrated. “Why does the coverage end there?”

“Well,” begins Tracy, preparing to be diplomatic with her answer. “Probably because stopping somewhere introduces a lot of risk that the insurance company isn’t prepared to cover, such as… you know, being robbed at a gas station…”

“Oh,” replies Pete.

Next week we will begin to take a look at the gas station owner’s policy.

Insurance for Convenience Stores Louisiana – Recap

In Part 1, Pete Ross had just finished a long, hard day of work at his restaurant and was in need of some refreshment.

While on his way to drop off the restaurant’s cash deposit from the day’s business, he decided to stop at Stop n’ Rob’s gas station corner store to buy a drink.

Before entering the store, Pete tossed the cash deposit into his backpack for safekeeping while in the store.

As he approached the entrance, he noticed a couple of large gentlemen standing in the parking lot. They were putting on ski masks.

Wondering to himself where they planned to ski in Louisiana, Pete entered the building.

Insurance for Convenience Stores Louisiana – Insurance Scenario Part 2

Pete walks in through the doorway and ambles toward the adult beverage section. He only intended to buy a drink, but some colorful packaging on a bag of Super Sour Candy Pops catches his eye and distracts him.

While trying to choose between the Blueberry Blast flavored Candy Pops and the Strawberry Explosion flavored Candy Pops, the skiing enthusiasts enter through the front door of the establishment.

“Everybody on the ground!” one of them yells.

Pete whips around in surprise and sees that both men have brandished handguns. Pete lets go of the Candy Pops and drops to the floor.

The big guy on the right runs over to the cashier and demands that she empty the cash register. While she struggles to do as he says under duress, the other thug runs up to Pete.

“You, gimme your wallet and phone right now!”

Pete fishes his wallet and cell phone out of his jeans pockets and tosses them at the robber’s feet.

The robber scoops them up and starts to back away, when he notices something.

“Hey, what’s in the backpack?”

Pete tries to think fast.

“Um… not money…” he squeaks out.

The robber forcibly unzips the backpack and pulls out the $5,000 cash deposit.

When the thief realizes what he’s holding, his eyes widen.

“Yo Frankie, I think we hit the jackpot! Hurry up and let’s get outta’ here!”

What will happen next? Find out in Part 3.

Lafayette Restaurant Insurance – Part 29: Recap

A lot has happened since we first began following the story of restaurant owner Pete Ross, so we thought we’d take a brief look at all the events that have transpired over the course of the last 28 articles.

It began when Pete Ross asked for a loan from his wealthy parents to start his own restaurant, even though he had no experience with running a business.

Even before the grand opening of Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium, Pete ran into obstacles. A power outage forced him to replace thousands of dollars in food stores because he didn’t have Spoilage Insurance.

Things didn’t let up after that.

The restaurant endured a lawsuit when a customer was injured after slipping on some spilled vegetable oil. Thankfully, accidental injury to a visitor was covered by Pete’s liability insurance.

Not long after that, one of Pete’s employees badly burned himself in the kitchen. The employee’s medical bills and other costs related to the accident were covered by Pete’s workers’ compensation insurance.

Sometime later, one of the restaurant’s grease traps caught fire, which was made worse when someone attempted to douse the flames with water, which only spreads grease fires! The damage to structural elements of the building like walls, beams, ceilings, etc. was covered under Pete’s Building Property Coverage, and damage to non-structural property like chairs and tables was covered under his Business Personal Property coverage.

Unfortunately, Pete’s high frequency of claims resulted in his insurance company dropping his policy, as Pete’s restaurant was simply too costly to justify maintaining him as a policyholder.

Pete’s insurance agent Tracy managed to find a single insurance company willing to insure Pete’s business, but at almost three times the premium rate he was used to.

To make matters worse, Pete brashly decided to buy the building he had been leasing for his restaurant, imagining that this would lead to an insurance discount. Instead, he now had to take on the added financial burden of insuring the property itself.

Even though Pete bought the building for a steal at $150,000, property coverage is based on replacement cost, which was estimated to be around $1 million. Wanting to avoid a high monthly premium, Pete decided to under-insure the building despite Tracy’s protests.

In our next entry, we’ll recap the events that transpired after Pete purchased his building.

Shreveport Restaurant Insurance – Story Recap

In the last few articles, we’ve taken a break from the main storyline of Pete Ross’ restaurant to tell the related side-story of “Big” George Jowlsby.

When his bar was served a lawsuit for liability in a drunk driving accident, George discovered that his bar does not have liquor liability insurance coverage.

He called up his former criminal defense lawyer who suggested George hide his assets lest they be taken by a court decision.

Here’s what happens next…

Restaurant Insurance in Louisiana – Coverage Scenario Part 23

Heeding Marky’s illicit advice, George decides to hide his assets.

He calls up his girlfriend, Veronica.

“Hey, Georgie.” answers Veronica.

“Hey, sweetie. I’ve got a favor it ask of you,” he tells her. “I need to move some money out of my business account, but I ain’t got any place to put it,” he continues. “So I’m going to give it to you so you can put it into your bank account, see?”

“How much?” asks Veronica.

“$150,000” George answers.

“You’re giving me $150 grand?”

“No, you’re just holding onto it for me while I sort some things out, see?”

“Well what are you going to do for me, Georgie?” Veronica inquires.

“Uh, tell you what; I’ll take you on that cruise you’ve been wantin’ to take. How’s that sound?”

Veronica likes the sound of that, so George withdraws his assets, leaving only $5,000 in his business account and $10,000 in his personal savings account.

He hands over the money to Veronica and instructs her deposit the money in her own account the next day.

“Now make sure you deposit all of it first thing tomorrow, alright?” George reiterates. I’m not going to accompany you so it don’t look fishy.

“I understand, Georgie.”

“Alright. I’ll see you tomorrow, sweetie.”

And with that, George drives off to go home.

Once George is out of sight, Veronica takes the money to the airport, flies to South Florida, and books a  six week cruise for one.

Stay tuned to find out what happens next time.

Louisiana Liquor Liability Insurance – Story Recap

For the last few months, we have considered our continuing fictional story about the exploits of a restaurant owner named Pete Ross. The life of Pete’s restaurant, called Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium, has been a rocky one, to say the least.

Pete and his restaurant have endured a series of traumatic events including fire, food loss due to a power outage, a lawsuit from an injured patron, and an injured employee.

The most recent catastrophe to befall Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium may be the worst yet, though.

A drunken dump truck operator named Chuck, owner of Lucky Chuck’s Haul and Dump, crashed his HUGE dump truck into the side of Pete’s restaurant, causing significant damage.

Pete’s insurance agent, Tracy, advised Pete to submit an insurance claim to the insurance firm that underwrites the driver’s dump truck, so Pete did just that.

Let’s find out what happens next.

Liquor Liability Insurance in Louisiana – Coverage Scenario Part 18

The physical damage to Pete’s restaurant came in at around $190,000 and Pete estimates he will lose an additional $75,000 while his restaurant is under construction due to lost business.

After a three day investigation, the commercial truck insurance company providing coverage for Lucky Chuck’s Haul and Dump, ABC Insurance, accepts liability for the claim and agrees to reimburse Pete just over $265,000.

The claims manager of ABC Insurance, Steve Stone, who approved the $265,000 payout on Lucky Chuck’s Hall and Dump insurance policy wants to see whether or not there are any contributing factors that may lead to subrogation or reimbursement from a negligent third-party such as a restaurant or bar where Chuck became intoxicated.

After an extensive interview with Chuck, the owner of Lucky Chuck’s Hall and Dump, Steve Stone is convinced the bar may be liable as the bartender clearly served far too much alcohol to Chuck which led to the accident he caused.

Steve forwards his recommendation to the legal department and after some joint consultation, ABC Insurance decides to take legal action.

ABC Insurance files a lawsuit against the bar specifying that liability for the accident belongs to the bartender who over served Chuck prior to the accident, citing Louisiana’s Serving Intoxicated Persons (SIP) Laws.

What does this mean for the bar? Will their Business Insurance policy defend against this lawsuit?  We’ll address those questions in future articles.

Baton Rouge Restaurant Insurance – Story Recap

In previous installments of our series on restaurant insurance, Pete Ross, owner of Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium, learned that his restaurant insurance policy was being dropped due to his inordinately high frequency of insurance claims.

Tracy, Pete’s reliable insurance agent, did her best to find new restaurant insurance options for her client. There is only one company left willing to insure Pete’s business despite its claims history, but their offer is significantly more expensive than what Pete had been paying up to that point.

Pete then informs Tracy that he intends to buy the building he had been leasing for his restaurant and wonders whether owning the property will afford him a discount on his insurance.

Tracy says she’ll get back to him soon.

Business Insurance Baton Rouge – Coverage Scenario Part 13

After putting together the adjusted quotes, Tracy calls Pete back two days later.

“Hi, Pete.”

“Hi, Tracy,” answers Pete. “Do you have any news for me?”

“I do. I had someone do a replacement cost assessment on the building you intend to buy, to determine the total amount of money it would cost to completely replace the building were it to be destroyed, let’s say because of a tornado or a fire,” explains Tracy.

“Your insurance rate will be based, in part, on the property’s replacement cost, and her estimate puts the replacement cost at about $1 million.”

“$1 million? But I only paid $150,000 for it!” Pete exclaims.

“Yes, you got it for a great price, but there is a difference between market value and replacement cost. Replacement cost is a rough estimate of what it would cost to replace your building if the whole thing burned down or something like that. It would certainly cost more than $150,000.”

“Okay, so what will my yearly rate be?” asks Pete.

“Last time we spoke I told you your rate with the new company was going to be $14,000 for the year, but if we add $1 million in coverage for the building you just bought, that $14,000 figure jumps to $27,000 for the year…”

Not for the first time, Pete spews coffee in surprise.

He spends the next twenty minutes on the phone with Tracy trying to figure out how he can get the price down.

Will he find a way to lower his rate, and if so, will it actually save him money in the long run?

Restaurant Insurance New Orleans – Story Recap

In parts 1 through 8 of our current series we have witnessed Pete Ross go through a number of challenging events with his restaurant, Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium.

If you recall in part 1, Pete is the wealthy son of a highly successful couple now retired. His parents encouraged him to get out on his own so Pete asked them for a loan to start up a new restaurant. They agreed to help their son get started.

Pete used the loan to open his business and purchase Restaurant Insurance, and since that day he has put his business insurance to the test.

To recap, Pete lost a few thousand dollars of food stock due to power loss, he was sued by a customer after that customer took a hard fall from slipping on spilled vegetable oil, one of Pete’s cooks burned himself badly in a kitchen accident, and now Squeaky Pete’s Pork Emporium just endured a grease fire.

Now that you’re caught up, let’s find out what Pete’s agent Tracy has to say about the grease fire…

New Orleans Business Insurance for Restaurants – Coverage Scenario Part 9

Tracy receives Pete’s message and gets back to him first thing Monday morning. She informs him that the damage done by the fire should be covered under two elements of Pete’s insurance.

First, any damage to the structure of the building – walls, beams, ceilings, etc. – would be covered under Building Property Coverage.

Second, any damage to items that are not part of the structure of the building – tables, chairs, ovens, kitchen equipment, computers, etc. – would be covered under Business Personal Property coverage, sometimes abbreviated to BPP.

Tracy helps Pete get the claim turned in. A claims adjustor named Ron Jordan is assigned to the claim, and will soon come out to inspect the damage.

“Thanks again, Tracy. I’ll talk to you next week,” Pete states with a nervous laugh.

“Well hopefully not, Pete. Insurance companies really don’t like it when you have too many claims, and you have had more than your fair share!” Tracy laughingly responds.

“I’ve certainly had my share of bad luck,” Pete agrees.

“Try not to let it ruin your week, Pete. Your insurance company will get you the money you need to get you back up and running again. Call me if you have any questions or, heaven forbid, another claim!”

“I don’t think I can take another claim, Tracy. I have enough drama in my life” Pete laments.

“I hear you, my friend. Just don’t let it get you down. Take care, okay?”

As Tracy says goodbye to Pete she thinks about what a nice guy he is.

It seems like his business is doing well. I just hope his insurance company doesn’t decide to cancel his policy after all those claims!

Stay tuned for next week’s episode to learn what happens next.
